Picture Books are for EVERYONE. Over the summer, Little Lion systematically pulled out almost every single picture book off of our shelves so she could re-read them. All of them. I’m serious. I’d find stacks and stacks of picture books and many empty spots on our admittedly chaotic bookshelves. Then she found the board book stash that was hidden on a wide shelf on our playroom. With cobwebs. These are our favorite board books that I didn’t want to put away when she was learning to read. You know, four-five years ago. :D

And, what’s more? She enjoyed every single one.

It made me so happy to see her enjoy the same books we enjoyed years ago. If only I didn’t have to nag her to return them to the shelves afterward.

Do you have a reluctant reader? Leave some random books laying around the house. Don’t criticize their choices, just leave some board books, some graphic novels, some chapter books out. Large books, small books, nonfiction, fiction, poetry, books in verse.

Does your kid like sports? I highly recommend Kwame Alexander. Feels reluctant to start something big? Maybe try Ben Clanton’s Narwhal series. Prefers to read books about history? Try some picture book or early chapter book biographies. Is your reader more artistic? Likes to make up stories? Try a wordless picture book like Flotsam by David Eisner or the Journey series by Aaron Becker.
